Oshtemo Charter Township Board Approves Transportation and Mobility Ordinance, Lifts Moratorium on Private Road Development

Oshtemo Charter Township, Michigan (February 26, 2024) – Oshtemo Charter Township proudly announces the enactment of the Transportation and Mobility Ordinance.  The adoption of this ordinance represents a step towards fostering safer, more accessible, and environmentally sustainable transportation infrastructure within the township.

“Countless hours have gone into developing the language of our new Transportation and Mobility Ordinance. We are excited to begin the implementation of this Ordinance to enhance development within Oshtemo Township through improved streets and non-motorized alternatives in efforts to create a vibrant, safer community. The Planning Department cannot thank our consultants at Progressive AE and Oshtemo’s Legal and Public Works Departments enough for their partnership in creating something that will be so beneficial to Oshtemo residents and businesses.”
— Colten Hutson, Zoning Administrator

With a clear focus on public safety and the overall welfare of the community, the ordinance is set to implement the principles outlined in various officially adopted plans, including the Oshtemo Township Master Plan, Go! Green Oshtemo Plan, Access Management Plan, and Complete Streets Policy.

“As a result of the enactment of the Township’s Transportation and Mobility Ordinance, the general and zoning moratoriums on private roads and streets under ordinances 650/661 and 651/662 will be rescinded effective February 27, 2024.”
— Jim Porter, Township Attorney

By providing a strong framework for developers to use in their planning, the Transportation and Mobility Ordinance will:

  • create a connected transportation system that serves all travel modes and aligns with the township’s planning goals;
  • prioritize safety to eliminate traffic-related injuries and fatalities, promoting public health and well-being;
  • ensure that all of our residents have access to affordable and reliable transportation options for their daily needs;
  • design transportation systems that fit the unique characteristics of our community, while respecting its identity;
  • encourage walking, biking, and other active transportation methods, support economic grown, and promote public health.
