Fruit Belt Trail Development
Current Development Projects:
Consumers Energy Gas Line Project:
From Consumers Energy:
“Consumers Energy will be beginning a gas pipeline upgrade project in Oshtemo along the Fruit Belt Trail starting February 26. The first phase of the project will involve forestry work, removing trees and brush along the trail. During this time the trail will be closed to ensure the safety of the public. The majority of the trail closures will be from Monday-Friday 6:30 am – 5:00 pm, some weekend work is possible. Barricades will be placed at the Erie St. Entrance and the 6th St. entrance stating the trail is closed. The work is projected to last three weeks. Thank you for your patience as we complete these important upgrades.”
Upon completion of the utility work, construction will begin on the development of the Fruit Belt Trail. This scenic two-mile path formerly housed the Fruit Belt Rail Line that operated on and off between 1852 and 1924, carrying fruit from South Haven to Kalamazoo. This corridor will be developed into a 10-foot-wide crushed limestone non-motorized trail with trailhead parking areas, benches, a bike repair station, wayfinding signs and distance markers.
